Epitalon and Thymalin both come from the “bioregulator” research tradition developed in Russia from the 1970s onward, which studied short peptides from specific organs and their effects on aging. They are often mentioned together, but one is a defined synthetic tetrapeptide and the other a thymic peptide preparation, and they are studied for different systems.

At a glance

Epitalon Thymalin
Origin Synthetic analogue based on epithalamin, a pineal-gland extract Peptide preparation derived from thymus tissue
Structure Defined tetrapeptide: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly Thymic peptide preparation
Organ system studied Pineal gland, circadian and cellular aging Thymus and immune function
Main research themes Telomerase activity and telomere length in cell cultures, melatonin and circadian rhythm T-lymphocyte differentiation, immune aging, cytokine balance

What “bioregulator” means

The bioregulator hypothesis proposed that short peptides from a given organ help regulate that organ’s function, and that the activity of these signals falls with age. Researchers first worked with organ extracts, then with short synthetic peptides designed to reproduce their activity. Epitalon is one of the best-known synthetic examples of that approach.

Epitalon: the pineal tetrapeptide

Epitalon is a four-amino-acid peptide based on epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland, the small gland that produces melatonin. Published cell-culture work has reported effects on telomerase activity and telomere length, and other studies have looked at melatonin output and circadian regulation in aging models. Thymalin: the thymic preparation

Thymalin comes from the thymus, the organ where T cells mature and which shrinks with age. Research focuses on T-lymphocyte differentiation, the decline of immune function with age and cytokine balance. It is often compared with Thymosin Alpha-1, a single, fully characterized thymic peptide. Thymalin research profile.

Reading the evidence carefully

Much of the published work on both compounds comes from a small number of research groups, and much of it is preclinical. That doesn’t make it wrong, but it does mean independent replication is limited. Treat reported effects as hypotheses to test in your own model, and design studies with proper controls rather than relying on headline claims.

Choosing for a study design

Telomere, circadian or pineal-related aging research: Epitalon.

Thymic and immune-aging research: Thymalin.

Broader aging panels: combine with mitochondrial compounds (SS-31, MOTS-c, NAD+) or the senolytic FOXO4-DRI.

Testing

Every lot we sell is tested by Bioviridian Labs (ISO/IEC 17025, Texas) for HPLC purity, mass-spectrometry identity, endotoxin and heavy metals. See the COA Library.
